Safety and Security

Your safety and security whilst using our facility is very important to us! We do everything that we can to make sure your experience at Surrey Storage Solutions is stress-free, but we need your help too!

Scroll down to view the mandatory safety instructions for the mobile staircases.

Please take a read through this page before your first visit and come back regularly to check for updated advice.

We take health, safety and security seriously at Surrey Storage Solutions, and we expect all customers and visitors to take it seriously too. To keep it clear and simple, we’ve put together a short list of site rules:

1.       Leave no mess. We have a strict zero-tolerance policy on littering and fly-tipping, and will charge an appropriate fee for cleaning or clearance where needed. Deliveries to the site (including skips, pallets, parcels) are not permitted.
2.       No smoking on site. Whilst storing flammable goods is prohibited, there will always be a risk of fire on site. Help us manage this risk by not smoking or lighting naked flames within your unit or the wider facility.
3.       Behave appropriately. Be always polite and respectful to all other customers and visitors. No playing, no loud music/noise, and no loitering. Always use your unit and equipment like the mobile stairs in a safe manner.
4.       Keep us secure. Ensure that your unit is locked and that the gate is closed behind you before leaving. Do not obstruct the gate. Do not share your gate code or let someone else in - any genuine customer or visitor will have their own code to use. Report any suspicious or illegal behaviour immediately – do not attempt to intervene.
5.       No unattended vehicles. Customers and visitors must not leave unattended vehicles at the site. Vehicles are allowed only for the purpose of moving goods into or out of your unit.
6.       No unsupervised children. We advise against bringing children to site, but understand that this might not always be possible! Please ensure that they are supervised by a responsible adult at all times.

Failure to adhere to these site rules may lead to termination of your agreement. The Police will be notified of any criminal behaviour that we are made aware of.

If you see anything on site that you’re not quite comfortable with, be sure to let us know right away by telephone or email. We take all complaints seriously – no matter how big or small!

Mobile Staircase Safety Instructions:

Our mobile staircases offer a simple solution for reaching upper-floor units whilst saving space to allow drive-up access across our facility. We’ve put together these short safety instructions so you can use the staircases safely and with ease. Please ensure that you have read and understood them in full before getting started. If you’re having any trouble, be sure to contact a member of the team on 0203 198 6768 for some extra guidance.

Before arriving at the facility:

1.       Put on suitable footwear. Flat shoes or boots with no open toes, worn with fastenings secured are mandatory. Strictly no heels/platforms, sandals, flip-flops/sliders, or espadrilles.

2.       Bring a friend. Our mobile staircases require two adults (aged 18 or over) to be used safely.

3.       Read these instructions! We strongly suggest keeping this page open on your phone, or printing them to bring with you too.

Getting started:

1.       Inspect them. Take a few seconds to have a look from ground level and check that the staircase is in good condition. The gates each side of the platform should be secured closed with the latch. If you spot anything that looks out of place or damaged, stop and give us a call before using them.

2.       Plan your route. If it’s your first visit, identify which unit is yours and where it’s located. Be aware of any obstacles or turns in your way before moving the stairs to access the unit. The stairs need to be placed side-on against your container.

3.       Hold them steady. One person must hold the stairs steady whilst the other releases the 4 brakes marked in red. Stand on the outside of the frame whilst doing so.

4.       Release all 4 brakes. The brakes are operated exactly like the ones you’d find on a supermarket trolly. Push down the lever to engage the brakes, pull it up to release them.

Moving the stairs:

1.       Take a safe position. After all 4 brakes are released, continue holding the frame steady and wait for the other person to stand clear.

2.       Move slowly. While the stairs are moving, you should be using only a pushing motion. Pulling the stairs puts you at risk of tripping over or bumping into something. You must not move the stairs with somebody on them, under any condition. Push gently and move at a slow pace. Keep an eye out for any people or vehicles moving around the site.

3.       Come to a stop. Stop the stairs in front of your container. The stairs may need a light pulling action to come to a complete stop. Don’t pull hard or lean back for leverage.

Using the stairs:

1.       Line them up. Line up the side of the flat platform with the doors of your unit. The doors should be positioned centrally between the safety gates. Push the stairs against the front of your unit.

2.       Engage all 4 brakes. Make sure there is no gap between the platform and the unit, and engage all 4 brakes. It should not move and must still be touching the front of your unit.

3.       Climb up. The stairs can be slippery if wet. Use the handrails whilst climbing the steps. Lift the safety latch on the gates and open them.

4.       Carrying goods. Whilst moving on the stairs, you must always be facing the direction of travel. Do not walk backwards.

Finishing up:

1.       Getting down. After locking your unit, close the gates on the platform and drop the safety latch to secure them in place. Make sure everyone has climbed down before releasing any of the brakes.

2.       Move them back. Move the staircase back to it’s parking area, as marked on the floor, following the same instructions as before. Position the stairs neatly within the marked area and engage the brakes on all 4 wheels.
